Craps dice

The question on everyone's mind is if dice is a random game or not. While some may say it is, others will not agree. There are players out there that are convinced they can influence what number will be rolled out. This is called dice setting or dice control. Dice setting will teach you how to throw the dice so that 7 has a less likely chance to come up and other numbers have bigger chances of being rolled.

There are dice setters out there that are capable of influencing the roll of the dice. By using dice setting they are able to make a living by playing craps. Not only do they make a pretty buck by using this technique, but they also make a little extra money by teaching other players how to set dice. If you want to you can even buy a practice craps table and put this advice to the test. Dice setters offer practice dice tables as well as dice setting advice.

But let us not stray form the subject. The question was if you could influence the outcome of a roll by dice setting. The answer is that this is very probable. But only after spending numerous hours throwing the dice and getting to know how the physics of dice throwing work. If you think about it dice throwing depends on many factors.

Some of these factors are: the position of the dice in your hand, the set of the dice in the moment of the throw, the spin you give the dice, how much they bounce off the table and off the wall and numerous other factors. When you look at all these factors you realize that dice throwing is not as random as you might think. Players have dedicated many, many hours practicing and refining dice setting and they have managed to influence the odds of the game. But just slightly.

The casinos take dice setting very seriously. That is why they have introduced a set of rules meant to prevent dice setting. These rules state that:

  • The dice must be handled with just one hand.
  • The dice must be thrown only as high as the dealer's line of sight.
  • After you throw the dice they must first bounce off the table and then off the wall at the opposite end of the craps table.
  • The dice must not be slid or dropped. They must always be tossed.
  • The shooter must keep up the pace. His throwing the dice must not slow down the pace of the game and must not interrupt the game.

The casinos introduced these rules because there have been players that used various dice setting techniques, like sliding the dice, in order to influence the game. It is very clear to us all that the casinos consider dice setting a serious problem. And since they do not want to lose any profits, they instated these rules.

But in the end dice setting is not a very good way to win money. And the experts will back us up on this one. It is their opinion too that you will not be able to win that much by dice setting. You are just slightly influencing the odds, you are not guaranteed a win. And the only time you will even see a buck from dice setting is after spending countless hours throwing dice.

Instead of spending all that time rolling the dice in the hope of maybe winning big money (the emphasis is on maybe) you are better off just having fun at the craps table and socializing with the other players. There is a lot of truth in the saying that money does not bring you happiness. Just ask the players that have won bundles.

Checking for a crooked dice

The casinos as well ass the players have to suffer from a craps game with crooked dice. Thousands of dollars can be lost in this way. The results are very random at craps so when you play for a short period of time it is hard to notice something suspicious.

These things are noticeable after a few hours or sometimes even days of continuously playing. The fun is spoiled if you look after irregularities as you have to pay attention to each combination and number rolled out.

The casinos make every possible effort to keep these kinds of dice away from a craps table but methods that can introduce them in a game exist. Also be sure to avoid the dice games outside of casinos as they can easily be crooked. The tests that are about to be mentioned are the surest and simplest.

  • Checking for a Loaded Dice

  • The Pivot Test

A die with hidden weights inside is considered a loaded one. This test is perfect to check if a die is loaded as the weights are usually hidden at the edges of the die to mask any marks. Place the die by two diagonally opposite corners between your thumb and forefinger. Do not pressure it just very slightly and keep trying different combinations. In case of a loaded dice the weighted side will go to bottom even if it is located at the top side. You can't miss it.

    The Sinking Test

This test is very simple. With the die just above the water drop it with a different number on top each time. Check for spinning while the die goes to the bottom and for the number facing up. The die is loaded if it lands with only one two or three numbers facing up.

  • Checking for a Beveled Dice

  • The Wobble Test

A die with a side sandpapered to make that side rounder it is a beveled die. The die will land more on the side that is flat than on the one that is rounded. Hold the dices and rub them together and continuously trying different combinations and sides. Instead of lying flat against each other the dice will wobble back and forth if they are beveled.
